Age of Aeons is a Gamified Learning Management System in the Cloud. This article will attempt to¬†¬†breaking down what that means in terms of the fundamental¬†design principles of Age of Aeons. ( For those of you who don’t care about the details -this site helps make learning easier and teaching funner. )
Gamified РAt the heart of Age of Aeons is Gamification. Gamification is the concept of applying game mechanics and game design techniques to engage and motivate people to achieve their goals. In my class this year students will earn experience points to level up, earn and spend gold, unlock achievements and powers, (plus a few other secret surprises). These game mechanics will be integrated into the learning experience to enhance engagement and motivation. (Click here to check out the mechanics of AoA in detail)
Gamification includes a number of psychological concepts, especially regarding motivation, behavior, and personality. Deep fluency and understanding of these concepts is one of the most important keys to proper gamification implementation.
Learning Management System РA learning management system(LMS) is a software application for the administration, documentation, tracking, reporting and delivery of electronic educational technology education courses or training programs. (Basically a learning management systems allows instructors to push content out to students Рwith permissions and privileges attached to the content. These systems help students stay organized in and keep up with assignments, projects and and exams.)
In addition to being able to do everything a traditional learning management systems; This system tracks and automates a lot of the game mechanics used my class. Additionally it helps manages some elements of classroom management.
The content in the class is organized in to eight units of study Рwith in each unit Рnearly all of the lessons, assignments, project and other learning material will be organized and posted. With supporting resource material design to scaffold their learning to help students experience success with the element in the lessons. In addition to online resources such as virtual labs, simulations, documents, and other online materials.  Students will have access to customized lessons and tutorials I have produced posted on youtube to support them for when they are working at home. My goal with all this is to help students take more ownership and responsibility for their own education so they can begin the process of becoming an autodidact. Being able to see progress and growth in a tangible way is a key feature of this whole thing. As students progress through course they will gain more privileges and powers over the rules and how the classroom works as direct result of their effort in my class.
On the Cloud Р Which means any internet connected device can use it. No apps or software needed.
